What is Google Drive?
Google Drive is much more than just a cloud-based storage and syncing service with a great free storage plan. It lets you create, edit, save and collaborate on documents.
Customers can specify any folder on the computer for backup, and merchants can save space by not copying files to local storage.
The plans offered under the Google One brand make storage upgrades more affordable than many options. Google Drive is really impressive with how it helps you save, backup, create and even edit files, whether you work alone or as part of a team.
There are some secrets to making the most money from Google Drive and its affiliate apps, Google Photos, Docs, Sheets and Slides.
But there is little question that this is one of the sweetest cloud offers you can find. Plus, it’s free – unless you have to store more than 15GB worth of data; See the Google One Pricing section below for more information on payment plans.
Drive’s local application for customers is Backup and Sync, which lets you sync almost any file or folder to a computer, no matter where your folder structure is.
The feature is a plus, but it’s a bit tangy and it still doesn’t convert the drive into a full backup utility. See our complete analysis of backup and sync in this dedicated section. For business users, the client application is called a file stream.
This provides a functionality similar to the OneDrive’s File On-Demand feature, which saves space on local drives, only download cloud-stored files when you open them.
The closest competitor to Google Drive is Microsoft OneDrive. Although there are some differences, the services are much more in terms of features. Microsoft offers more rich productivity applications and better sharing options for free users, but Google also provides more basic free storage.
At the moment, you make your choice based on which ecosystem you use: If you use Windows and Office, OneDrive will be firmly integrated with them. If you’re heavy in Google’s ecosystem, its drive makes sense for you.
Apple has also entered the game of file-syncing and cloud storage with iCloud Drive, which also provides online collaborative online document editing.
However, iCloud Drive is not as strong as the offers of Google or Microsoft. For example, you cannot use the online version to edit documents that include tracking, and there is no search in the iCloud Drive web client.
The other two big names in the online file syncing service space, Box and Dropbox, both provide their own document types for collaboration.
Dropbox with notes and paper with boxes. Both integrate Google and Microsoft Editors into their services, even allowing you to create a new Microsoft Word Doc from the menu options.
In the case of workflow tools in particular, the box exceeds the box, and Dropbox provides lots of third-party coordination through its app center. However, the productivity offered by both Google and Microsoft’s cloud services does not match the integration and ness of applications.
Google One Pricing
Google One price options start at 1.99 per month for 100GB; The 200GB plan costs 99 2.99 per month, and Google One raises the ান 9.99 per month limit to 2TB. A high-level 10 TB plan will cost 99.99 per month.
Google Drive currently offers a generous 15GB of free storage, one-tap access to Google One plans support experts and the ability to share accounts with up to five family members. Users can also avail Google Play Purchase Discounts and Purse Deals on a select few hotels found on Google Search.
By comparison, Microsoft’s OneDrive offers 5GB of free storage and you get 100 GB for 99 1.99 per month, 99 6.99-Microsoft 365 personal account gives you 1 TB per month and Microsoft 365 family gives you 6 TB per month (1 for six users). TB) gives.
Microsoft 365 options include downloadable Microsoft Office applications as well as additional security features (such as ransomware detection and two-step verification), mobile offline folders, and family protection applications for Android and iOS.
Apple offers 50GB of iCloud drive space for 99 cents per month; Apple did 2TB 2 years ago for one year before Google came close, but the company has provided 1GB of free space for all users.
Apple device owners get 5GB for free. Students make a sweet deal with an Apple ID account operated from their schools: a free 200 GB. Apple lets you share storage with up to six family members from 200GB and 2TB plans.
Dropbox is among the Stinger services for free storage, with only 2GB provided, while the box is more generous with 10GB. The story is the opposite for paid accounts: the box charges $ 10 for 100 gigabytes per month, while that price gives you 1 TB in Dropbox.
Keep in mind that not everything counts in your Google Drive storage limit. Files you create (in Google-owned, online formats) using Google Docs, Sheets, and other in-drive applications are not counted towards that quota, or the files are not shared with you.
You can, however, export these files to a more standard format. Gmail’s messages (including spam) and all email attachments, however, count without your limits.
Photos may or may not count against your quota; It depends on your upload preferences. You can upload photos to the regular Drive folder or use Google Photos Products.
Uploads, including products for photos, are only counted against your limitations; Choosing high resolution limits your photos to 16 megapixels, which is perfectly acceptable for non-professionals.
What exactly is Google Drive?
For a while, Google tried to use the name Google Drive to refer to productivity applications – Docs and the rest.
However, the company has returned to the more intuitive use of Docs editors to refer to online productivity applications and drives for online storage.
Microsoft OneDrive works similarly to Google Drive and its applications with online versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Google Drive, OneDrive and Apple iCloud Drive also work as file-syncing services like Dropbox and SugarSync. All file-syncing services allow you to download and install a program on all your computers,
And a master folder (which looks like another folder on the computer) and all its subfolders are automatically synced between the web version of the device and the service.
This means that if you work on a file from the office, and then go home and choose where you left it, you can email the file yourself without downloading it, or without loading it from a USB key.
When you finish your work at home, you can be sure that all your work will be displayed on your office computer in the morning. Syncing depends on having an internet connection, but as long as you have it, it’s a piece of cake.
Just to repeat: Google Drive and OneDrive both provide desktop to desktop syncing services in addition to their web-based Office-Productivity application and straight-up online file storage.
Despite the name of the Backup and Sync desktop app, we’re not saying Google Drive is an online backup solution. Saving files to online storage can also act as a kind of backup. True Online Backup runs scheduled backups and provides complete system restore capabilities.
Compatibility is rarely a problem with Google Drive: you can upload files for online editing, convert them to Google’s file format, create new documents, spreadsheets and slide presentations on the web or web desktop – and export finished products to standard file formats. .Doc, .rtf, .pdf and many more.
One problem is if you finish multiple copies of the same document, for example, create it in Word and then open it in Docs. If you install a backup and sync or file stream (see below) Google Drive will look like a local folder.
Integration with third party services is another strength of Google Drive. From Slack to HaloFax to Pixel’s online photo editor all the web services you can think of can only be integrated with Google Drive.
Dropbox and OneDrive integrate with third party services, but Google Drive integrates with everything.
Google Drive web interface
The online design of Google Drive has improved over the years and is now more intuitive than ever before. You start on the main drive page, which will display the thumbnail of the document in the middle and the trash along with your folders, shared files, photos, recent, starred and left rails.
On the right are buttons for sharing information about a selected file, getting links, deleting, previewing and viewing.
There are also buttons to switch between settings and list and thumbnail view. Surprisingly, the webpage is not as responsive as OneDrive. Resizing a narrow page disables some interface features.
However, we are impressed that Google Drive applies right-click context menus to its web interface (similar to OneDrive). Many web applications ignore this capability, including Apple’s iCloud Drive web interface, so you get the browser menu instead of the application.
Thanks Google has stopped the folder label call. It is now called as their folder, just like everyone else. You can also create subfolders to your heart’s content.
Other ways to organize from folders include color-coding and the use of stars. One advantage is that you can drag files from your computer to any open folder in the browser.
Once you open or create a document, you’ll be taken to a new browser tab for Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc. Note that the drive can handle more than just the three major types of office documents: there are also forms, drawings, and maps, and you can integrate third-party web applications to work with more types of documents, such as CAD or music files.
You can view a document in three different ways: edit, suggest, and view. The first is self-explanatory; Suggestions put collaborative changes in parentheses, which the document owner may or may not accept.
Views simply shows the final edited document. The names of the collaborators appear when you collaborate while they are editing a document. Color coding helps to differentiate each user’s cursor within the file when multiple people make changes at once.
Google Drive now even supports Microsoft Office modification mode. The online version of Apple iCloud’s pages lets you view revisions, but you can’t edit using them. To take a deeper dive into Google’s online productivity suite, read our review of Google Docs, leaflets and slides.
Desktop client: backup and sync and file stream
Google Drive offers two separate desktop utilities for sync: backup and sync for customers and file streams for Business G Suite users. The former (like SugarSync) lets you assign any folder on your system to sync. Other services like Box, Dropbox, iCloud, and OneDrive keep synced files in a set folder with subfolders of your choice. .
You may, however, be able to identify any file to back up online backup services like Carbonite. (Note: Sugarsink is owned and operated by J2 Global, the parent company of GCF Davis, and owned and published by PC Mag.com.
In the past, synced services that allowed you to specify any folder or file on your system – the way Microsoft’s previous mesh product created confusion, because you had to map that folder to other synced computers’ folders, which can be complicated.
if you have multiple computers . Then there’s the issue of having a file open in both places at the same time – which version edits should be saved? And where do you find all this in mobile clients? Google Drive cleverly eliminates these issues by keeping separate folders for each machine and keeping all accessible from the browser.
You can still use the drive as its own special synced folder, but the ability to set folders anywhere on the computer’s file system is a plus.
Installing backups and installing sync is similar to installing Chrome with the “Go to your icons, set, go” messages. After installation, sign in to your Google or Gmail account and choose the folder you want to sync. By default, your desktop, documents and pictures folders are selected are C: Drive or you can add any folder to the computer except this PC folder.
This is significant, as it means that Google Drive cannot be used as a full-system online backup service in the way that Acronis True Image, Carbonite, iDrive and SOS Online Backup can do. These services allow you to create an image of everything on your disk, including programs and operating system files.
Then comes syncing from the other side, and this part is important for existing Drive users: you select the folder from your online Google Drive that you want to sync to the computer. As with Google’s previous solution, Backup & Sync creates a specific Google Drive folder on your computer,
in addition to syncing other folders you choose. This folder is the way Microsoft OneDrive and iCloud got a top-level file explorer icon and installs a small icon in your notification area, from where you can call its settings dialog at any time.
Once you’ve finished the setup and synced your PC, you’ll see a computer tab in the Google Drive web and mobile application interface (see the second screenshot above). We’ve installed an iMac backup and sync on Windows laptops and for testing.
The computer tab showed two. Some upload attempts kicked the error message, but try again and the Retry button resolves this issue. Also note that when we try to add the program folder to a Windows PC, a message pops up saying that something went wrong.
This is probably another reason why Google Drive still cannot be considered as a full backup service, requiring admin privileges because of the folder’s read-only settings. However, the same can be said for OneDrive, Dropbox and Box.
In Windows File Explorer, the right-click option allows us to open the file in our browser or share the rights to view or edit only via email. The way context menus, carbonite and iDrive do not allow you to add files and folders to online stores, you can only add files or folders through the backup and sync application, a slight inconvenience.
When deleting files, Backup and Sync provide three settings: you just want to delete files anywhere on the current machine or say what you need to do. This approach turns it into an archive service, a repository of the entire history of file contents.
One of the great benefits of Drive is that it saves every edited version of your saved file.
The File Stream utility for G Suite users only is very similar to Backup and Sync: it creates a local-look folder on the computer to access and save your files. It has a bigger advantage than backup and sync, as mentioned earlier.

So I’d like to see the company add this feature to backup and sync; OneDrive offer; All OneDrive users, by comparison, can take advantage of its file-on-demand feature. File Stream The customer does not share the ability to specify files anywhere in the system for product backup.
Drive cloud and mobile features
Since Google Drive stores files in the cloud (and this is synonymous with search for any organization), these files are highly searchable.
A recent update added drag-and-drop functionality to search results, allowing you to drag a results file to the left folder. Another feature related to search is especially great: the drive can scan an image and use it using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) or detect it using AI.
OCR also works on PDFs in Google Drive. We had a PDF with a unique string of files, but not the name of the file, and Google Drive provides accurate results almost instantly when we search for it.
But OneDrive now does just that, using AI to apply tags to photos and extracting text that you can see in the info panel. For Google Drive OCR to work, you need to open the image in Docs; On OneDrive, you can see the text from the images in the info panel without any additional steps.
Other similar applications include Office Lens, Adobe Scan, Evernote, and OnNote using built-in OCR, although you must be a free paid Adobe or Evernote user to get OCR in PDF (OCR for images works for free users).
Google Drive is available as an iPhone app, iPad app and Android app. Once the applications are installed you will have access to the latest version of all your files.
You can also view and edit some 90 different file types. It doesn’t offer auto-smartphone-photo uploads like Dropbox and OneDrive, but for the Google Photos app.
Note that Google Photos will no longer find any folders in Drive. Google is now completely different from the photos you uploaded before making this change.
What else do you want?
Despite its abundance of tools and slick operations, there are still two things we want to see improved in Google Drive. Multimedia features are not all powerful.
For example, we noticed fake photos, there is no easy way to delete dubby, eyes without them.
However, this is a problem shared by OneDrive.
If you’re a power user of Office applications, there may be features you’d like to see added to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, such as convenient right-click mini toolbar formatting options and some advanced spreadsheet functions.
but Google Apps includes enough tools to do most things. . Sometimes it takes a little research to figure out how to enable or add a feature, but Google Drive and its apps have enough to enable most basic business needs.
One potential concern about Google Drive is privacy. Google collects information from your online activities to serve you targeted ads. Microsoft claims that it does not, but if privacy is public to you, we recommend sticking to a file-syncing service that does not disclose names at first.
Resilio Sync (formerly Bitorient Sync) keeps your data out of the cloud without using direct P2P connections. Serentef Digital Security Deposit Box is online storage that is all about encryption, privacy and security.
A number of online backup services allow you to choose an encryption key that is in your own hands, so that even company employees cannot decrypt your files.
These include SpiderAcon (which emphasizes privacy) and SOS Online Backup. Be careful not to lose your encryption password or your data will get better. Another option is to simply create your own cloud using a NAS with a device similar to Western Digital’s My Cloud.
Finally, you can encrypt your data and use any service before sending it to the cloud, but this deprives them of a good deal for their convenience.
Nothing prevents you from using multiple file storage and syncing services, especially considering that you can get free storage. Using multiple services gives you the option of creating your home and work files section or keeping photos separate from documents.
This allows you to decide which of your files should be kept in a more secure cloud space and which should be left out of Google’s tracking policy.
Google Drive makes interesting features interesting so that you don’t use it but you miss it. The choice of other editors in the department OneDrive is suitable for your consideration.
